Taxi driver dress code

All licensed hackney carriage and private hire drivers in Hartlepool must follow a dress code. This helps promote a professional image of the taxi trade and ensures public and driver safety is not compromised.

Acceptable dress standards

Drivers must wear clean, modest, and practical clothing.

Minimum standards:

  • men: Long trousers or knee-length shorts, and T-shirts with full body and short sleeves
  • women: Long trousers, knee-length shorts, skirts or dresses, and T-shirts with full body and short sleeves

Footwear:

  • shoes must be secure and suitable for safe driving
  • flip-flops, sandals without heel straps, or loose footwear are not allowed

Unacceptable dress standards

The following are not permitted:

  • dirty or damaged clothing (holes, rips, stains)
  • clothing with offensive or suggestive words or graphics
  • sportswear such as football kit, tracksuits and beachwear
  • footwear that is not secured around the heel
  • drivers wearing no top or bottom clothing
  • headwear that covers the face or identity such as baseball caps and hoodies, unless they are:
    • worn for religious reasons
    • part of a uniform for a special occasion
