Applications are invited for apprenticeships offering an opportunity to work at Hartlepool’s new state-of-the-art Highlight Active Wellbeing Hub.
Hartlepool Borough Council’s Active Hartlepool Service is looking to recruit six apprentice community coach activators to encourage people to live healthier lives by becoming more active.
They will initially work across Active Hartlepool’s existing venues – Mill House Leisure Centre, Headland Sports Centre, Brierton Sports Centre and Summerhill Country Park – before moving to Highlight when it opens in spring next year.

Councillor Pamela Hargreaves, Chair of the Council’s Economic Growth and Regeneration Committee, said: “We are spending £150 million on a range of major development projects across the Borough of Hartlepool, including Highlight Active Wellbeing Hub, and our aim has always been to ensure that local people benefit in terms of job and training opportunities, both during construction and when facilities are up and running.

Applicants should have good communication skills, a desire to provide excellent customer service and be enthusiastic and positive team members. They should also be strong and confident swimmers and will be required to complete a swim test as part of the interview process.
Upon completion of the apprenticeship, there may be an opportunity to move into lifeguard/gym floor staff and leisure attendant posts.
Highlight which is being funded by Hartlepool Borough Council, Tees Valley Combined Authority and Sport England, will replace Mill House Leisure Centre and its facilities will include a 25-metre eight-lane main pool, a 25-metre four-lane learner pool with movable floor and a leisure pool incorporating a race slide and water play features. There will also be a 100-station gym, two inter-connected fitness studios, an indoor cycling/spinning studio, a café with seating for 100 covers, active and soft play areas and a party room, four NHS consultation suites, external ground and first-floor terraces and external activity and events spaces.
