Food waste collections are to be rolled out across Hartlepool in the coming months, and an initial trial involving around 1,000 homes is about to get underway.
Homes in 49 streets in the Rossmere ward are included in the trial and each will receive a letter this week providing more details.
Two caddies (bins) – a smaller one for use in the home and a larger one for outside, into which the contents of the smaller caddy should be emptied – will then be delivered to each home in the week commencing 17th November. They will also receive an information leaflet explaining the service and a roll of bio-degradable caddy bags. Weekly food waste collections will begin in this area on Tuesday 25th November.
The streets involved in the trial are Aberdeen Road, Airdrie Grove, Alford Court, Alloa Grove, Alness Grove, Alva Grove, Arbroath Grove, Ardrossan Court, Ardrossan Road, Argyll Road, Armadale Grove, Arran Grove, Ayr Grove, Balcary Court, Ballater Grove, Balmoral Court, Balmoral Road, Banff Grove, Barra Grove, Beath Grove, Beauly Grove, Benmore Road, Blairgowrie Grove, Bonnyrigg Walk, Braemar Road, Bramley Court, Brechin Grove, Brierton Lane (Stockton Road-Catcote Road), Buckie Grove, Calder Grove, Callander Road, Campbell Road, Catcote Road (Brierton Lane-Owton Manor Lane), Clarkson Court, Cullen Road, Darvel Road, Dumfries Road, Dunbar Road, Dundee Road, Durness Grove, Elmfield Gardens, Fulbeck Close, Owton Close, Owton Manor Lane (Catcote Road-Stockton Road), Picktree Gardens, Rossmere Way, Stockton Road (Owton Manor Lane-Brierton Lane), St Teresa’s Close and Whitworth Gardens.
Councillor Owen Riddle, Chair of the Neighbourhoods and Regulatory Services Committee, said: “As a Council, we are always looking at ways of increasing local recycling levels as part of our commitment to a sustainable future, so we would appeal to residents to support this initiative. We are pleased to be able to offer a weekly collection for food waste which is often attributed to making existing bin provision smell.
“Following the initial trial, the service will be rolled out across the borough and we will be providing more information about timings in due course. Please check back on the Council’s website for updates, including where we will be expanding the service to in the next phase.”
All councils in England must collect food waste from homes in their area on a weekly basis from April 2026 following changes to the law. The collections are part of the Government’s plan to improve recycling rates and lower greenhouse gas emissions. The funding for new bins and collection vehicles has been provided by central government so this initiative has come at no cost to Hartlepool residents.
