Weekly food waste collections are to be expanded to cover more Hartlepool homes following the successful launch of an initial trial.
Collections from around 1,000 homes in 49 streets in part of the Rossmere ward began last week, resulting in almost a tonne of food waste being sent for recycling.
Now, weekly collections are to be introduced to homes in 31 streets in the Fens area. These homes will receive a letter providing more information, two caddies – a smaller one for use in the home and a larger one for outside, into which the contents of the smaller caddy should be emptied - and a roll of bio-degradable caddy bags this week.
Collections will then begin next week. All residents need to do is put out their large caddie alongside their standard refuse/recycling bin by 7.30am on their usual collection day.
The latest streets to receive weekly collections are Aldeburgh Close, Barford Close, Brandon Close, Burwell Walk, Catcote Road, Coningsby Close, Crowland Road, Felixstowe Close, Fenton Road, Holland Road, Ingham Grove, Lincoln Road, Mildenhall Close, Mowbray Road, Navenby Grove, Newark Road, Northwold Close, Royston Grove, Spalding Road, Spilsby Close, Stowmarket Close, Thetford Road, Thursby Grove, Upton Walk, Wainfleet Road, Watton Close, Welland Road, Winthorpe Grove, Wisbech Close, Witham Grove and Yarmouth Close.
Councils in England must collect food waste from all homes in their area on a weekly basis from April 2026 following changes to the law. The collections are part of the Government’s plan to improve recycling rates and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
Funding for the new caddies and the vehicles required for the collection of food waste has been provided by central government so this initiative comes at no cost to Hartlepool residents.
