A further expansion of weekly food waste collections in Hartlepool has been announced.
The latest roll-out covers homes in Ashby Grove, Berkeley Avenue, Boston Close, Cairn Road, Caistor Drive, Caithness Road, Catcote Road, Chichester Close, Claymore Road, Comrie Road, Crail Walk, Cranwell Road, Crieff Walk, Cromer Walk, Croxton Avenue, Dawlish Drive, Downham Grove, Fareham Close, Fens Crescent, Honiton Way, Kesteven Road, Mardale Avenue, Owton Manor Lane, Paignton Drive, Retford Grove, Salcombe Drive, Stamford Walk, Stockton Road, Torquay Avenue and Truro Drive.
Yellow tags will be attached to residents’ bins to provide them with more information about what to expect from the service. This will be followed by the delivery to homes this week of two caddies – a smaller one for use in the home and a larger one for outside, into which the contents of the smaller caddy should be emptied – an information leaflet and a roll of bio-degradable caddy bags.
Weekly food waste collections will then begin next week. All residents need to do is put out their large caddie alongside their standard refuse/recycling bin by 7.30am on their usual collection day.
Collections began in Hartlepool last month with an initial trial involving 49 streets in the Rossmere area. Following the trial’s successful launch, which saw almost one tonne of food waste collected in the first week, the initiative was then extended to a further 31 streets on the Fens estate. The latest roll-out means that from next week over 100 streets will be receiving weekly collections.
Councils in England must collect food waste from all homes in their area on a weekly basis from April 2026 following changes to the law. The collections are part of the Government’s plan to improve recycling rates and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
Funding for the new caddies and vehicles required for the collection of food waste has been provided by central government so this initiative comes at no cost to Hartlepool residents.
