Roll-out of weekly food waste collections continues

Published: 6 January 2026

Weekly collections of food waste are to be rolled out to even more properties in Hartlepool.

An additional 45 streets are being added to those which already receive collections.

Each property will receive two caddies, a small one for use inside the home and a larger one for outside into which the contents of the smaller caddy should be emptied. They will also receive a roll of bio-degradable caddy bags and an information leaflet.

The caddies will be delivered from Wednesday 7th January and the first food waste collection from these additional properties will be on Tuesday 13th January. All residents need to do is put out their large caddie alongside their standard refuse/recycling bin by 7.30am on their usual collection day.

The streets are Station Lane (Glentower Grove to Warrior Drive), Glentower Grove, Gillpark Grove, Glaisdale Grove, Warrior Drive, Ark Royal Close, Brigandine Close, Courageous Close, Forester Close, Sea Breeze Park, Gala Close, Harvester Close, Onyx Close, Neptune Close, Mary Rose Close, Lord Nelson Close, Intrepid Close, Kinterbury Close, St Ann’s Court, Catherine Grove, Tower Street, Surtees Street, Lynn Street, Huckelhoven Way, Empire Square, Burbank Street, Fastnet Grove, Goodwin Walk, Hilda Walk, James Street, Lizard Walk, Longscar Walk, Musgrave Walk, Newhaven Court, Scarborough Street, Sheerness Grove, Spurn Walk, St Abb’s Walk, St Bee’s Walk, St Catherine’s Court, Staindrop Street, Staithes Court, Whitby Grove, Whitby Street and Whitby Walk.

Collections began in Hartlepool in November with an initial trial involving 49 streets in the Rossmere area. This latest phase is the third expansion of the initiative.

Councils in England must collect food waste from all homes in their area on a weekly basis from April 2026 following changes to the law. The collections are part of the Government’s plan to improve recycling rates and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Funding for the new caddies and vehicles required for the collection of food waste has been provided by central government so this initiative comes at no cost to Hartlepool residents.
