Hartlepool Borough Council is inviting artists to take part in an inspiring new exhibition exploring the theme of resilience – with one lucky artist also winning the chance to later stage a solo show.
Inspired by the 100th anniversary of the General Strike, the spring Hartlepool Art Gallery exhibition in May and June this year will celebrate resilience in its broadest sense, such as:
- personal survival through adversity
- community bonds that sustain us
- adapting to an environment
- psychological recovery
- technological innovation
- preserving culture
- overcoming barriers
The exhibition is open to artists aged 18 or over who have a link with Hartlepool. Artists who have previously exhibited at the gallery are welcome to take part.
The artworks must be flat and can be in any medium that can be wall-mounted. They must also have been completed within the last two years.
Applications to take part in the exhibition must be received by 1 March.
One featured artist will also be selected for a solo exhibition at the gallery in January 2027, creating new work inspired by Hartlepool Museum and Art Gallery’s historic collection.
Councillor Karen Oliver, Chair of Hartlepool Borough Council’s Housing, Growth and Communities Committee, said: “Hartlepool has a proud history of resilience and we’re looking for artworks that explore and capture endurance, adaptation and strength in the face of challenge.
“The exhibition is a wonderful opportunity for artists to share their work with a wider audience – with the chance also for one of them to have their own solo exhibition as well - and we’re excited to see how they reflect on what resilience means to them and to our communities.”
