More homes to receive weekly food waste collections

Published: 14 January 2026

The roll-out of weekly food waste collections in Hartlepool is continuing, with homes in 97 more streets set to receive the service.

Each property will receive two caddies, a small one for use inside the home and a larger one for outside into which the contents of the smaller caddy should be emptied. They will also receive a roll of bio-degradable caddy bags and an information leaflet.

Delivery of the caddies will begin tomorrow (Thursday 15 January) and the first food waste collections from these additional properties will be on Wednesday 21 January. All residents need to do is put out their large caddie alongside their standard refuse/recycling bin by 7.30am on their usual collection day.

Food waste collections began in Hartlepool in November with an initial trial involving 49 streets in the Rossmere area. This latest phase is the fourth expansion of the initiative.

Councils in England must collect food waste from all homes in their area on a weekly basis from April 2026 following changes to the law. This is part of the Government’s plan to improve recycling rates and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Funding for the new caddies and specialist vehicles required for the collection of food waste has been provided by central government so this initiative comes at no cost to Hartlepool residents.
