Over 20,000 Hartlepool homes receiving weekly food waste collections

Published: 24 February 2026

More homes in Hartlepool are set to receive weekly food collections, bringing the total number across the borough to more than 20,000.

A further roll-out of collections, covering 102 streets, has been announced by Hartlepool Borough Council.

Properties receive two caddies, a small one for use inside the home and a larger one for outside into which the contents of the smaller caddy should be emptied. Delivery of caddies to the additional homes is taking place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (24, 25 and 26 February) and the first collections of food waste from these properties will take place on Friday (27 February).

Residents should present their large caddies alongside their standard refuse/recycling bins on their usual collection day. Different vehicles are used to empty caddies and standard bins, so both should be put out by 7.30am to ensure collection.

The latest homes to receive weekly food waste collections are in Amble Close, Bankston Close, Barnard Grove, Barnes Court, Barrington Close, Basildon Drive, Beckston Close, Blackton Road, Blaise Garden Village, Bodnant Close, Bournemouth Drive, Bowes Green, Brancepath Walk, Brimston Close, Burnhope Road, Burnston Close, Bushton Close, Butterwick Road, Cairnston Road, Chastleton Close, Chelker Close, Chelston Close, Conroy Close, Cragston Close, Cropston Close, Daleston Close, Dobson Place, Dorchester Road, Dowson Road, Dunston Road, Fellston Close, Fewston Close, Fontburn Close, Fulthorp Avenue, Gibson Grove, Gilberti Place, Glenston Close, Goldsmith Avenue, Grassholme Road, Greyfriars Court, Hanbury Grove, Hayston Road, Hillston Close, Hirdman Grove, Hood Close, Howden Road, Hutone Place, Joyce Road, Kielder Road, King Oswy Drive, Lakeston Close, Lanchester Drive, Laycock Way, Lazenby Road, Lulworth Grove, Marshall Close, Mereston Close, Merriman Green, Miller Crescent, Millston Close, Moorston Close, Mountston Close, Nesbyt Road, Nicholson Way, Nookston Close, Octavia Drive, Parkstone Grove, Peakston Close, Pert Road, Pikeston Close, Porrett Close, Portland Grove, Reedston Road, Ridlington Way, Riggston Place, Rillston Close, Riverston Close, Rogeri Place, Roundhill Close, Saddleston Close, Sandbanks Drive, Selset Close, Snowdon Grove, Speeding Drive, Springston Road, Stileston Close, Studland Drive, Swanage Grove, Tarnston Road, Tempest Road, The Crest, Warkworth Drive, Waterside Way, Weymouth Drive, Whinston Close, Whitrout Road, Willington Drive, Witton Drive, Wolsingham Road, Woodchester Crescent, Woodhouse Lane and Worset Lane.

Food waste collections began in Hartlepool in November last year with an initial trial involving 49 streets in the Rossmere area. This latest phase is the ninth expansion of the initiative. To date, around 80 tonnes of food waste has been collected

Councils in England must collect food waste from all homes in their area on a weekly basis from April this year following changes to the law. This is part of the Government’s plan to improve recycling rates and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Funding for the new caddies and specialist vehicles required for the collection of food waste has been provided by the Government so this initiative comes at no cost to Hartlepool residents.
