More Hartlepool homes to receive weekly food waste collections

Published: 4 March 2026

A further expansion of weekly food waste collections from homes in Hartlepool has been announced.

Hartlepool Borough Council is to start collecting waste from an additional 96 streets from Tuesday 10 March.

Before that, homes will each receive two caddies, a small one for inside use and a larger one for outside into which the contents of the smaller caddy should be emptied. The caddies are being delivered this week.

Residents should present their large caddies alongside their standard refuse/recycling bins on their usual collection day. Different vehicles are used to empty caddies and standard bins, so both should be put out by 7.30am to ensure collection.

This latest roll-out brings the total number of homes receiving weekly food waste collections to around 21,000, some 46% of all properties across the borough.

Collections began in Hartlepool in November last year with an initial trial in the Rossmere area and this is the tenth expansion of the initiative. To date, around 80 tonnes of food waste has been collected.

Councils in England must collect food waste from all homes in their area on a weekly basis from April following changes to the law. This is part of the Government’s plan to improve recycling rates and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
