Don’t become a victim of crime this Christmas

Householders in Hartlepool are being urged to take action to protect themselves against crime and ensure that they don’t have their Christmas ruined.

Jane Munden, Victim Services Officer with the Hartlepool Community Safety Team, has issued a range of advice on home security over the festive period.

She says there tends to be an increase in burglary and thefts at this time of the year, but there are some practical measures that people can take to protect their homes, garages and outbuildings.

She advises:

  • Don’t advertise on social media when you are away from your home.
  • Don’t put presents under your Christmas tree too early and make sure they can’t be seen through windows and doors.
  • Lock all doors and windows when you go out.
  • Make sure you keep garages and sheds locked. Tools stored in these buildings could be used to break into your home.
  • Make sure you have home contents insurance.
  • Consider dusk-to-dawn lighting for all external lights.
  • Security mark all valuables.
  • Keep keys out of sights and certainly not in view of windows or doors.
  • Use timer switches to light up your home if you are away from the property.
  • Dispose of Christmas boxes and packaging discreetly so you are not advertising that you have valuable items in your home.
