Expansion of weekly food waste collections continues

Published: 12 March 2026

The next roll-out of weekly food waste collections in Hartlepool is underway.

Hartlepool Borough Council is to start collecting waste from a further 97 streets from Wednesday 18 March.

This is the eleventh expansion of the service since it was launched in November last year. Since then, over 125 tonnes of food waste has been collected.

The additional properties will each receive two caddies, a small one for inside use and a larger one for outside into which the contents of the smaller caddy should be emptied. These are being delivered this week and next.

Residents should present their large caddies alongside their standard refuse/recycling bins on their usual collection day. Different vehicles are used to empty caddies and standard bins, so both should be put out by 7.30am to ensure collection.

Councils in England must collect food waste from all homes in their area on a weekly basis following changes to the law. This is part of the Government’s plan to improve recycling rates and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

The latest homes to receive weekly food waste collections are in Ainderby Walk, Alliance Street, Ann Crooks Way, Annandale Crescent, Arkley Crescent, Arabella Close, Arabella Street, Arch Court, Atkinson Court, Beacon Street, Boagey Walk, Bradshaw Court, Bridgepool Close, Bruce Crescent, Brunel Close, Bulmer Place, Burke Place, Butterstone Avenue, Carrick Street, Clarence Street, Clearpool Close, Clifford Close, Corporation Road, Davison Drive, Deerpool Close, Durham Street, Earl Street, Ellett Court, Emerald Close, Emerson Court, Fairy Cove Terrace, Fairy Cove Walk, Firby Close, Forest Avenue, Frederic Street, Galleysfield Court, Garnet Close, Garside Drive, Hastings Place, Haven Walk, Haxby Walk, Hays Gardens, Henrietta Street, Heronspool Close, Hindpool Close, Horsley Place, Howard Street, Jones Road, Jowitt Road, Leas Grove, Leas Walk, Lightfoot Crescent, Mansepool Close, Marine Drive, Miers Avenue, Millpool Close, Montague Street, Moonstone Walk, Moor Parade, Mountbatten Close, Nesham Road, Northgate, Old Cemetery Road, Opal Close, Otterpool Close, Pearl Close, Penrith Street, Pentilly Street, Pounder Place, Purves Place, Rockpool Close, Romanby Close, Ruby Close, Runciman Road, Salter Walk, Sea View Terrace, Sedgewick Close, Sharp Crescent, Skelton Street, Somersby Close, St Cuthbert Street, St Helen’s Street, Sunstone Close, Telford Close, Thorpe Street, Topaz Close, Topping Close, Trinity Street, Troutpool Close, Vane Street, Waller Court, Warren Road, West View Road, Wingfield Close, Winston Court, Winterbottom Avenue and Zircon Close.

Funding for the new caddies and specialist vehicles required for the collection of food waste has been provided by the Government so this initiative comes at no cost to Hartlepool residents.

The latest roll-out coincides with national Food Waste Action Week which is running from 9-15 March. The week aims to inspire simple, practical action that helps food go further - saving you money, time and stress, whilst also protecting the planet. Statistics show that 60% of food waste in the UK occurs in homes. Every year households throw away 4.4 million tonnes of edible food worth £17.5 billion. For a family of four, that's around £1,000 wasted every year. We would ask Hartlepool residents to first of all consider how they can make their food go further to reduce waste, and then to commit to recycling in their caddies what is ultimately left over.
