A179 Tall Ships roundabout road works to begin

Published: 30 March 2026

Major road works are about to start at the A179 Tall Ships roundabout in Hartlepool.

They involve the construction of two-lane approaches to the roundabout on the A179 eastbound carriageway and on the exit road from Clavering Estate by realigning the kerb lines and reshaping both islands.

The improvements, required as part of the nearby Upper Warren housing development and funded by the developer, aim to reduce traffic queues at peak times.

The works which are due to commence on 4th April, will last around six weeks and involve two road closures.

  • The A179 eastbound approach to the roundabout from 9.30am-3.30pm on weekdays and all day on weekends. This closure is expected to be needed for three weeks.
  • The short link from Bamburgh Road on Clavering Estate to the roundabout. This complete closure will be in place for the duration of the improvement works.

The scheme has been timed to coincide partially with the school easter holidays to take advantage of reduced traffic.

Signed diversions will be in place, while bus companies have been informed of the closure and will put temporary measures in place.
