Brierton Sports Centre to re-open after major upgrade

Published: 2 July 2026

Fitness fans across Hartlepool will soon have a brand new reason to get active as the gym and fitness studio at Brierton Sports Centre prepare to re-open on Monday 13 July.

Run by Hartlepool Borough Council’s Active Hartlepool service, the centre has undergone an extensive refurbishment designed to elevate the health and wellbeing experience for the local community.

Final preparations are now underway ahead of reopening day, and as a thank you to loyal members for their patience during the works, anyone who froze their membership will also receive free access from 13–31 July, with payments resuming from 1 August.

Visitors can expect a fresh, modern and high-performance environment across both the studio and fitness suite.

  • Brand-new Technogym spin bikes
  • Expanded space after removing two walls
  • New suspended ceiling, flooring and full redecoration
  • Upgraded fire safety doors
  • Air conditioning for comfort throughout every session

The fitness suite upgrade includes:

  • New Technogym equipment throughout, providing cutting-edge fitness options
  • Introduction of steppers following member feedback
  • An expanded workout area after structural improvements
  • New specialist gym flooring
  • Enhanced lighting, sound system and redecoration
  • Upgraded air conditioning systems

In addition, the toilets have been fully refurbished, with new cubicles, sinks and fittings. The shower facilities in the changing rooms have also been modernised.

The reopening of Brierton Sports Centre marks another significant investment in leisure provision across the borough. It follows last summer’s upgrade of Headland Sports Centre and comes just weeks after the opening of Highlight, Hartlepool’s new multi-million pound Active Wellbeing Hub.

Gemma Ptak, Hartlepool Borough Council’s Director of Housing, Growth and Communities, said: “We are delighted to welcome people back to Brierton Sports Centre after such a major transformation. These improvements are all about giving our residents access to modern, high-quality facilities that help them lead healthier lives. This is a fantastic space that the whole community can enjoy.

“This refurbishment represents a real step-change in the experience we can offer our members. We’ve listened carefully to feedback and the result is something we’re incredibly proud of. We also want to thank our members for their patience by giving them free access for the rest of July.

“The reopening of Brierton is another key milestone in our ongoing commitment to improving health and wellbeing across Hartlepool. Alongside developments like Highlight and recent investment in Headland Sports Centre, we are building a strong, modern network of facilities that will support our communities now and into the future.”
