The countdown is on to one of Hartlepool’s biggest sporting events of the year, and people are being urged to get involved as either competitors or volunteer marshals.
The Big Lime Triathlon, organised by specialist company Wild Deer Events and supported by Hartlepool Borough Council, returns on Sunday 9 August.
Starting and ending in Hartlepool marina and taking in Seaton Carew, there is a range of events designed to suit competitors of all ages and abilities.
So whether you're a seasoned triathlete chasing a new personal best, a first-time competitor looking to test yourself, or someone keen to support the action from the sidelines, there is a place for everyone at this year’s event.
Councillor Rob Darby, Chair of Hartlepool Borough Council’s Housing, Growth and Communities Committee, said: "The Big Lime Triathlon has become one of Hartlepool's flagship sporting events, attracting competitors from across the region and beyond whilst showcasing our fantastic coastline, marina and sporting facilities.
“Whether you're an experienced athlete looking for your next challenge, someone taking part in their first event, or a volunteer keen to support the action, we'd love to see you get involved.
"The volunteer marshals are absolutely vital to the success of the event and we are extremely grateful for the support they provide. Their enthusiasm and commitment help create a safe, welcoming and enjoyable experience for everyone taking part and spectating. I would encourage anyone who can spare a few hours on the day to sign up and be part of what promises to be another fantastic occasion for Hartlepool."
Participants can choose from:
- A standard distance triathlon - 1,500m swim, 40km bike ride, 10km run
- A sprint distance triathlon - 750m swim, 20km bike ride, 5km run
- A standard aqua bike event - 1,500m swim, 40km bike ride
- A sprint aqua bike event - 750m swim, 20km bike ride
- Open water swims - 750m and 1,500m distances
Every competitor will receive a medal and event merchandise, along with a snack and drink on the day.
Places are still available, but organisers are encouraging anyone interested in taking part to secure their entry as soon as possible.

The volunteer marshals play a vital role in ensuring the safe and smooth running of the event, assisting competitors and spectators at key points across the course. Marshals of all ages are welcome, although anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
They will be required from 6.15am until approximately 11.30am and, as a thank you for their support, will receive:
- A free entry to a Wild Deer event, which can be gifted to a friend or relative, this year or next year
- A piece of Wild Deer merchandise
- A snack and drink on the day
