A series of events is to take place across Hartlepool to mark Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) Awareness Day 2026.
Organised by Hartlepool Borough Council's Speech, Language and Communication Team, the free events on Friday 16th October will shine a spotlight on DLD, a little-known condition that affects around two children in every classroom of 30, yet remains largely under the radar.
DLD is a life-long condition that affects a person's ability to understand and/or use spoken language. Although it can have a significant impact on education, friendships, employment and wellbeing, it is not linked to intelligence and is often referred to as a hidden disability because many people have never heard of it.
Through the programme of community events, parents, carers, professionals and the wider community will be able to learn more, access expert advice and discover how small changes can make a big difference.
People can drop in and speak directly with specialists at:
Central Library, Hartlepool (9.30am to 12 noon)
- Information stand and DLD awareness resources
- Advice and support for families, practitioners and the wider community
Headland Library (10am to 11am)
- Stories and Rhymes session with DLD-themed activities
- Information and guidance for parents and carers
Rossmere Family Hub (9.30am to 11am)
- Baby Group focusing on early communication skills and language development
- DLD information and resources for families
The aim is to help more people recognise the signs of DLD and understand the importance of early support. Greater awareness can help children and young people access the right help sooner, improving confidence, opportunities and outcomes.
Members of the Speech, Language and Communication Team are also encouraging those who attend the event to show their support by wearing purple, a colour associated with DLD Awareness Day.
