A689 maintenance works underway

Published: 4 November 2026

Vital maintenance works are being carried out along the A689 over the next two weeks to enhance safety and improve conditions for thousands of drivers.

The first phase of work, between Truro Drive in Hartlepool and Wolviston roundabout, is being carried out this week, while next week the focus will shift to the section west of the A19 through to the Durham County Council boundary.

The programme, carried out by Hartlepool Borough Council staff, involves a range of essential maintenance activities, including grass cutting, weed spraying, tree trimming, white line refreshes, road sweeping and gully cleansing, litter picking and work to some traffic signals.

To allow the works to be completed safely, alternate inside and outside lane closures will be in place on both carriageways. The works will be carried out between 9.30am and 3.30pm each day to avoid peak-time traffic and minimise disruption for motorists.

In a further effort to reduce future disruption, external organisations, including utility companies, are being given the opportunity to carry out their own works while the traffic management measures are already in place. This will help minimise the need for additional lane closures and traffic restrictions at a later date.

Councillor Amanda Napper, Chair of the Council's Neighbourhoods and Regulatory Services Committee, said: "The A689 is one of the main gateways into and out of Hartlepool, so it's vital that we carry out regular maintenance to keep it safe, efficient and looking its best.

"While we appreciate that roadworks can sometimes cause inconvenience, we've carefully planned these works to take place outside the busiest times of day and have worked with utility companies to make the most of the traffic management arrangements already in place.

"These improvements will help maintain a key route for residents, businesses and visitors while reducing the need for further disruption in the future. I'd like to thank motorists for their patience and understanding while this important work is carried out."

The maintenance programme forms part of Hartlepool Borough Council's ongoing commitment to maintaining the borough's highways infrastructure and ensuring the road network remains safe and reliable for all users.
