Mrs Sue Snowdon, HM Lord-Lieutenant of County Durham, has issued the following message for the 80th Anniversary of VE Day today.
May 8th 1945 is a day etched in the memory of everyone who witnessed it.
After nearly six years of war Germany officially surrendered and the conflict was finally over.
Celebrations erupted around the world to mark its end.
Colourful bunting and flags lined the streets of London, towns and villages across Britain, bonfires were light, people danced in the street and pubs were full.
We owe so much to those who fought so gallantly over 80 years ago and today is our opportunity to honour and pay tribute to the second world war generation from across the United Kingdom and Commonwealth.
The passing of the years has no way diminished the courageous deeds of those who sacrificed so much in the pursuit of peace, freedom and justice.
We must, every one of us, remain vigilant in upholding the values for which our Armed Forces fought so gallantly eighty years ago, for their selfless service in those most difficult and dangerous times.
Sue Snowdon
