Summerhill Nature Reserve and Outdoor Centre
Summerhill is a 100-acre nature reserve and outdoor activity centre on the western edge of Hartlepool. The site was transformed from farmland into a vibrant green space starting in 1997, with major work completed by 2002.
It now provides a vital link between the town and the countryside, offering a mix of nature, recreation, and education.
Nature and wildlife
Over 65,000 trees planted in the late 1990s are now maturing into thriving woodland. The site also includes ponds and grassland meadows, managed hedgerows and protected archaeological sites.
As the landscape matures, its value to wildlife continues to grow.
Outdoor activities
Summerhill supports a wide range of outdoor sports, including:
- orienteering
- cross-country running

There is a well-maintained network of footpaths throughout the site, making it ideal for walking, running and exploring.
Education and community
The Summerhill team runs activities for schools and community groups, including:
- environmental education
