Eco-driving: save fuel, save money, reduce pollution
What is eco-driving?
Eco-driving is a driving style that helps reduce fuel consumption, lower emissions, and save money. It’s about driving smarter, not slower, and making small changes that benefit both your wallet and the environment.
Benefits of eco-driving
By adopting eco-driving techniques, you can:
- reduce fuel consumption
- lower vehicle wear and tear
- save money on fuel and maintenance
- cut your carbon emissions
- drive more safely and smoothly
A trial by the AA found that drivers saved an average of 10% on fuel in just one week of eco-driving. Some saved as much as 33%.
Top eco-driving tips
Before you drive
- lighten your load - remove unnecessary items from your car to reduce weight
- reduce drag - take off roof racks or boxes when not in use
- avoid idling - modern engines don’t need warming up
- scrape ice - don’t leave your engine running to defrost
- plan your route - avoid traffic and roadworks
- use a satnav - many help avoid congestion
- combine short trips - cold starts use more fuel
- walk or cycle - for short journeys, leave the car at home
Vehicle maintenance
- service your car regularly
- use the correct engine oil
- check tyre pressure monthly and before long trips
While driving
- switch off the engine if stationary for more than a minute (if safe to do so)
- change up early - shift gear at around 2,000 RPM
- drive smoothly - avoid harsh braking and acceleration
- ease off the gas - anticipate stops and coast in gear
- slow down - driving at 85mph uses 25% more fuel than at 70mph
- use windows or air con wisely - open windows at low speeds; use air con at high speeds
- turn off electrics - switch off heaters, fans, and lights when not needed
