Local highways maintenance transparency report

On 20 December 2024, the government announced highway maintenance funding allocations for 2025 to 2026. This includes additional funding from the 2024 budget.

To receive 25% of the £500 million additional funding, local highway authorities must show they are meeting government criteria for best practice and continuous improvement in road maintenance.

Why this matters

These requirements follow recommendations from:

  • the National Audit Office report
  • the Public Accounts Committee hearing

Both highlighted the need for better understanding and reporting on the condition of local roads in England.

By sharing this information, we can:

  • help secure vital funding
  • improve how we inform residents about road maintenance
