School exclusions

Only the headteacher or deputy headteacher (in the headteacher’s absence) can exclude a pupil for disciplinary reasons.

There are three types of exclusions:

  • Fixed-term suspension – temporary removal from school (up to 45 days per academic year)
  • Permanent exclusion – permanent removal from school
  • Lunchtime exclusion – pupil must stay off school premises during lunch

What happens when a child Is excluded

The school must contact parents or carers immediately and explain:

  • the reason for the exclusion
  • the length of the suspension or if it’s permanent
  • your right to make representations to the governing board
  • your right to attend a meeting and be accompanied or represented

All exclusions must be recorded in the school register and on the pupil’s record. The school must provide work for your child during the exclusion period.

What happens after a further suspension or permanent exclusion

If your child receives another suspension or is permanently excluded, the head teacher must write to you again explaining the reasons.

For the first five days of a permanent exclusion, the school must provide work for your child to complete at home. If the exclusion lasts longer than five consecutive days, an alternative education placement will be arranged.

If your child:

  • is suspended for 15 or more days in one term,
  • will miss a public exam or national curriculum test,
  • or is permanently excluded,

then the governing board must meet to review the exclusion. You have the right to:

  • attend the meeting,
  • bring a friend or representative,
  • or submit written comments for consideration.

Support from us

If your child is permanently excluded, one of our staff will contact you to explain the next steps and answer any questions.

During a suspension or exclusion:

  • your child must not be in public places during school hours without a valid reason, or you may receive a penalty fine.
  • your child must not enter the school site during the exclusion period.

You’ll be invited to a reintegration meeting after a suspension to help support your child’s return to school.

You can request a copy of your child’s school record by writing to the headteacher. A small fee may apply for photocopying.
