Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education (SACRE)

What is the aim of SACRE?

SACRE provides advice to the local authority on:

  • collective worship in all maintained schools (excluding voluntary aided schools with a religious character)
  • religious education (RE) taught in line with the agreed syllabus

What does SACRE do?

SACRE can advise the local authority on matters related to RE, including:

  • choosing teaching materials for RE
  • teacher training in RE
  • RE teaching methods
  • monitoring RE and collective worship in schools
  • supporting pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development (SMSC)

What is a locally-agreed syllabus?

The locally-agreed syllabus is the statutory document for RE in Hartlepool. It outlines:

  • what should be taught in each key stage
  • the standards expected at the end of each key stage

The syllabus is developed by an agreed syllabus conference (ASC) and must be reviewed every five years. If a majority of SACRE committees request a review, the local authority must convene a new conference.

Academies can choose to adopt the agreed syllabus to support consistency and collaboration across schools.
