Maritime Avenue
Scheme Overview - To install a segregated cycleway which is part of a bigger scheme to improve connectivity between Seaton Carew and the Marina. This work also involves changing the kerb line of the carriageway and renewing its existing surface to a tarmac material, which will provide a smoother driving surface and increase its longevity.
For the safety of both site staff and residents, and to ensure the works can be progressed as quickly as possible, reducing overall disturbance, a full road closure was implemented. This allows the full footway / verge / carriageway width to be worked on as a single ‘unit’ as opposed to working only on half the road width at a time. An incremental closure would very likely extend the completion date well beyond September.
The scheme is externally funded.
Project Time Frame - The contract for the scheme has an agreed duration of 6 months, which would provide a completion date of mid-to-late September, although it is anticipated that various aspects of the scheme will be complete before then. For example, every effort is currently being made to re-open one of the footways to allow safe pedestrian access directly to Marina Way.
