The Environmental Information Regulations 2004 (EIR) give you the right to access environmental information held by public authorities and certain private organisations that carry out public functions, such as utility companies.
Examples of environmental information include:
- land use
- waste and pollution
- energy and emissions
- food contamination
- pest control
- refuse and recycling
- dog control and environmental health
Our responsibilities
We must:
- respond to EIR requests within 20 working days
- offer advice and guidance to help you access the information you need
- respond to requests free of charge (subject to reasonable disbursements) unless one of the 'exceptions' set out in the regulations applies.
- supply information in a suitable format, where possible
If your request includes information covered by the Freedom of Information Act or Data Protection legislation, different rules, charges and timescales may apply.
