Key terms
Homelessness
Being without a permanent home. This includes people living with friends or family in temporary or unsuitable accommodation.

Intermediate rent (type of tenure)
Homes available to rent at 80% (or less) of typical market rent. Often used for new-build properties.
Lease (a type of agreement)
A legal contract that allows someone to live in a property for a set period in exchange for rent.
License
A basic agreement giving someone permission to live in a property. Common for lodgers who rent a room and share facilities with the landlord.
Owner occupation (type of tenure)
This is where the property is occupied by the owner as their principal residence and is either owned outright or is being bought with a mortgage. The owner is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the property. If the owner does not pay their mortgage, they may be at risk of losing their home.
Private rent (type of tenure)
Renting from a private landlord (not us or a registered provider). Tenants usually sign a 6-month assured shorthold tenancy and may need to provide references, a deposit and rent in advance.
Shared equity (type of tenure)
A government-backed scheme to help first-time buyers. You jointly own the property with another party, often the government or a housing provider.
Shared ownership (type of tenure)
You buy a share of a property and pay rent on the remaining share, which is owned by a registered provider.
Social housing (type of tenure)
Affordable housing with subsidised rent, provided by registered landlords (called registered providers). Tenants receive secure or assured tenancies.
