If you're struggling to pay your rent, you may be able to get extra help through a Discretionary Housing Payment.
Who can apply?
You may be eligible for a DHP if you receive Housing Benefit or the housing element of Universal Credit and, in the opinion of the local authority, you need:
- extra financial help with your housing costs or need to move to more affordable accommodation
As part of your application, we may need to contact your landlord for information about your tenancy.
How long support lasts
We decide how long a DHP is awarded for. This includes:
- the start and end dates of the payment
- whether the payment can be backdated
- how and when the payment is made
How to apply
You can apply online if you need help with:
- the bedroom tax
- a shortfall between your rent and your Housing Benefit or Universal Credit
