Convert a civil partnership to a marriage

Same-sex couples can convert their civil partnership to a marriage if:

  • it was formed in England or Wales, or
  • it was registered overseas at a British consulate or armed forces base under the laws of England and Wales.

Do we need to convert in the same district?

No. You can convert your civil partnership in any district in England or Wales.

For example, if your civil partnership was registered in County Durham, you can still convert it in Hartlepool.

How does the conversion work?

The conversion is a simple legal process that takes place at our office.

  • a legal declaration is prepared for you both to sign in front of a registrar.
  • your marriage is then registered.
  • a marriage certificate is issued.

Can we have a ceremony?

Yes. You can choose to follow your conversion with a ceremony at a licensed venue.

If you choose this option, the process has two stages:

  1. Attend a conversion appointment at our office to sign the declaration.
  2. Hold your ceremony, where your marriage will be registered.

You must hold your ceremony within 12 months of your conversion appointment.
