Top 5 highest 5-year rates of cancer by site in Hartlepool (2022):
- Basal cell carcinoma: 713.93 per 100,000
- Prostate cancer: 580.68 per 100,000
- Breast cancer: 353.77 per 100,000
- Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma: 229.1 per 100,000
- Colorectal cancer: 219.51 per 100,000

In the previous year (2021) the 5-year prevalence duration by site showed Breast, Prostate, Blood, Colorectal and non-small cell lung cancer to be the highest in Hartlepool.

The following information is a summary of key findings from this information when viewed in 2025.
Hartlepool PCN
New cancer cases (Crude incidence rate) in 2022/23 was 670 per 100,000 compared to 635 in the North East and North Cumbria ICB and 548 in England. The rate in Hartlepool is the highest seen in data shown from 2009/10 and remains higher than the England rate since 2010/11. Cancer QOF prevalence is increasing with 3.8% of patients registered with cancer in 2023/24, this has steadily increased since 2009/10 alongside the England prevalence.
Breast screening coverage (53 to 70 years) (3 year) was 68.0% in 2023/24 lower than both the region (71.1%) and national (69.9%) coverage. Cervical screening among those aged 25 to 49 years was higher than the regional and national at 76.8%, the benefit of which can be seen in the cervical cancer prevalence which is lower than others for Hartlepool. Cervical cancer screening for those aged 50 to 64 years (5.5 year) is similar to the region and national coverage, again the benefit is shown in the lower prevalence rates. Bowel cancer screening coverage increased from 2017/18 to 2019/20 then plateaued up to 2023/24 however coverage is similar to regionally and nationally.
Hartlepool Health PCN
New cancer cases (Crude incidence rate) in 2022/23 was 691 per 100,000 higher than Hartlepool PCN, the region and nationally. The incidence has seen a sharp increase since 2020/21 (468 per 100,000).
Breast cancer screening (3 year) (53 to 70 years) has remained steady between 2022/23 and 2023/24 (64.5%) however is lower than the ICB (71.1%) and England (69.9%). Cervical cancer screening for those aged 25 to 49 years is higher than both the region and England for 2023/24 the benefit of which is shown in the prevalence data. Cervical screening coverage (50 to 64 years) is slightly lower than the region and national coverage however has not experienced any significant change in trend. Bowel cancer screening (60 to 74 years) is increasing alongside the England trend, although Hartlepool Health PCN coverage is lower at 68.1% compared to England’s 71.8%.
One Life Hartlepool PCN
New cancer cases (Crude incidence rate) has slowly increased since 2009/10 data with spikes in 2014/15 and 2017/18. Latest data (2022/23) shows new cases at 624 per 100,000 which is the lowest of the three PCNs in Hartlepool.
Breast screening (53 to 70 years) (3 year) has increased by 5.6% between 2022/23 and 2023/24 to coverage higher than both the region and England. At 71.5% coverage One Life has the highest coverage in Hartlepool. Cervical screening (25 to 49 years) is declining after a peak in coverage in 2019/20, the latest coverage (2023/24) was 69.9% which is higher than the national coverage and similar to the regional. Cervical screening (50 to 64 years) has experienced a gradual decline since 2010/11 similar to national trends however remains lower than both the regional and national coverage at 72.0%. Bowel cancer screening in One Life PCN has seen an increasing trend to 69.8% which is similar to the ICB (71.4%) and England (71.8%).
