Safe & Considerate Driving Course Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why have I been offered this course?

The police may offer this course as an alternative to prosecution for the offence of driving without due care and attention.
Courses must usually be completed within 4 months of the offence date.

Can I attend a course outside Cleveland and Durham?

Yes. The scheme operates in most areas of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, although course dates and availability may vary.
You can select a different area when booking online or refer to the contact details provided in your course offer.

Is a car provided?

Yes. A modern, fully insured car will be provided for the course.

How much of the course is on the road?

  • the morning session is classroom-based.
  • the afternoon session is on-road.

You may share the car with up to two other participants. You’ll take turns driving and observing.
Even as a passenger, you are expected to actively participate in the training.

Will there be a test?

The only test is a statutory eyesight check, required for all drivers.
There is no written or practical driving test.
You may be asked to complete a short evaluation of the course, but this is optional.

Can I fail the course?

You must:

  • attend the full course
  • participate actively
  • show improvement in your driving

If you meet these requirements, the police will take no further action.

Can I attend if I’ve lost my driving licence?

You must bring original photographic ID on the day of the course.
Accepted forms include:

  • photocard driving licence
  • passport
