Supporting Young People in Hartlepool Through Education Grants

The Henry Smith Education Charity (Charity No. 527395) aims to support the education of young people under the age of 25 who live in Hartlepool and need financial assistance. While students can study anywhere in the UK, their home address must be within the Borough of Hartlepool.

The role of an advocate

Advocates play a vital role in helping students apply for grants. The charity only accepts applications submitted and supported by an advocate—someone who knows the applicant and works within their education or training organisation. This helps ensure fairness, accuracy, and data protection.

As an advocate, you will:

  • verify the applicant’s identity, age, and home address
  • confirm the accuracy of the application form
  • explain why the applicant needs financial support
  • confirm what the grant will be used for
  • confirm the applicant has a good attendance record
  • provide a statement of support
  • remind the applicant to submit a short feedback statement six months after receiving a grant

What can a grant be used for?

Grants can help cover costs related to education or training, such as:

  • clothing
  • books
  • tools or instruments
  • course fees
  • travel expenses

How much can be awarded?

Grants typically range from £50 to £150, depending on individual needs and available funds. The charity supports around 25 applicants each year.

Who can be an advocate?

Advocates should be staff members from schools, colleges, universities or training organisations who know the applicant well. Each organisation is encouraged to support no more than three applications per year.

How to support an application

Once the applicant has completed the first two sections of the online application form, work with them to complete the rest. Save the form and email it to the charity on their behalf.
