Applying for home to school transport

The legal requirement for ensuring that a child attends school is that of the parent.  This means that a parent must take all actions necessary to enable their child to attend school.

Transport can be provided by us for those pupils of primary and secondary age in our area who are travelling over the statutory walking distance to/from the main entrance of their nearest suitable school. The statutory walking distances are:

  • 2 miles up to the age of 11 years (primary pupils)
  • 3 miles from the age of 11 to 16 years (secondary pupils)

The statutory guidance that local authorities follow is provided by the Department for Education. Following in particular the below legislation:

  • Section 508A of the Education Act 1996: sustainable modes of travel 
  • Section 508B of and Schedule 35B to the Education Act 1996: travel arrangements for eligible children
  • Section 508C of the Education Act 1996: travel arrangements for other children
