Becoming an employer

If you receive a direct payment and choose to employ your own personal assistant (PA), you will become an employer.

Benefits of employing your own PA

You can:

  • choose who supports you
  • build a close working relationship with your PA
  • decide when and how they support you
  • enjoy more flexibility than using a care agency

Your responsibilities

As an employer, you will have legal responsibilities under employment and health and safety laws. We can offer advice and support, but it’s important to think about these responsibilities before deciding to employ your own staff.
