Equality and your responsibilities as an employer
Every employee has the right to work in an environment that is free from discrimination, harassment and victimisation.
The Equality Act 2010
As an employer, you must follow the Equality Act 2010, which protects employees from unfair treatment based on the following protected characteristics:
- age
- disability
- gender reassignment
- marriage and civil partnership
- pregnancy and maternity
- race
- religion or belief
- sex
- sexual orientation
You must also protect your employee from third-party harassment. This means you are responsible for dealing with any complaints of harassment from people your employee comes into contact with while working.
