Abuse and neglect
Abuse and neglect can happen to anyone and in any setting. It includes physical, emotional, sexual, financial and discriminatory abuse, as well as neglect, self-neglect, domestic abuse, modern slavery and organisational abuse.
Common signs of abuse or neglect include:
- unexplained injuries or bruising
- sudden weight loss or poor hygiene
- fearfulness or anxiety
- lack of money, food or clothing
- changes in behaviour or mood
Abuse can happen in someone’s home, in public, in care settings or online. It is often carried out by someone the person knows and trusts.
If you are concerned about someone, it’s important to act.
