Childhood Injuries JSNA

What needs are unmet?

Strategic Issue 1

  • Lack of targeted injury prevention programmes for adolescents, particularly around violence, substance misuse, and mental health.
  • Limited youth engagement in designing and delivering safety interventions, despite evidence that co-production improves effectiveness.
  • Insufficient access to safe recreational spaces and structured activities, especially in deprived areas.

Strategic Issue 2

  • Inconsistent access to home safety equipment (e.g. stair gates, cupboard locks) for low-income families.
  • Limited follow-up after health visitor advice—many families do not receive home visits or practical support to implement safety changes.
  • Gaps in coordination between housing services and child health teams to address environmental hazards in temporary or poor-quality housing.

Strategic Issue 3

  • Lack of targeted infrastructure improvements (e.g. traffic calming, safe crossings) in high-risk areas identified through injury data.
  • Limited community enforcement and education around speeding and pedestrian safety.
  • Insufficient integration of road safety into wider child health and wellbeing strategies.
