Road safety and crossing safely

Using a pedestrian crossing

  • press the button and wait
  • do not cross while the red man is lit
  • when the green man lights up, cross only when traffic has stopped
  • keep looking and listening while crossing

Using a zebra crossing

  • stand at the edge of the pavement
  • look right and left and wait for traffic to stop in both directions
  • continue to check for traffic while crossing

Traffic islands

Traffic islands can help you cross the road more safely.

  • treat each side as a separate crossing
  • use the Green Cross Code for each part of the road
  • remember that traffic does not have to stop at a traffic island

Bridges and underpasses

Footbridges can be used to cross very busy roads.

  • there are currently no footbridges in Hartlepool

Underpasses can be used to cross roads, but you should take extra care.

  • avoid using underpasses if you are alone
  • they may be more quiet and less visible
  • it may be safer to walk further and use a pedestrian crossing

The Green Cross Code

  • Think Find a safe place to cross.  A safe place is where you can see the traffic clearly in all directions.
  • Stop just before you get to the kerb.
  • Look around for traffic
  • Listen for traffic
  • Wait If there is any traffic coming, let it pass
  • Look and listen again When the road is clear go straight across.  Walk quickly but don’t run.
  • Arrive alive Keep looking and listening while you cross the road.

Important safety advice

  • avoid crossing between parked cars
  • do not cross near bends, junctions or hills
  • be aware of emergency vehicles, cyclists and bus lanes
