Using the bus safely

Before you travel

Plan your journey:

  • which number bus to take
  • where to get on
  • where to get off

Plan your journey

At the bus stop

When you are waiting for the bus:

  • look for the bus stop sign to check which services stop there
  • stand or sit where the driver can see you
  • if the bus is coming, hold out your arm to signal the driver
  • have your bus pass or money ready before the bus arrives

On the bus

When you get on the bus:

  • pay the driver or use your bus pass on the ticket machine
  • tell the driver if you need help
    • for example, extra time to sit down or help knowing when to get off
  • try to sit near the front of the bus
  • stay seated until the bus has stopped
  • if you are near your stop, press the bell once

When the bus is stopping:

  • wait until the bus has fully stopped before getting up
  • take your time when getting off

Priority seating and space:

  • some buses have spaces for wheelchair users
  • you may be asked to move if someone needs this space

Ask the driver for help if:

  • you are unsure which bus to get
  • you do not know when to get off
  • you think you may have missed your stop
  • you feel unsafe or uncomfortable
  • the bus breaks down or changes route
