MEMBER PROFILE

Councillor Christopher Akers-Belcher became Leader of Hartlepool Borough Council following a change in Governance arrangements in May 2013. In May 2019, Christopher became Chair of Hartlepool Borough Council's Regeneration Services Committee.

Christopher has over 22 years of senior Local Government experience, working in Finance, Revenues and Benefits as a Local Government Officer at a number of North East Councils. Roles were varied and included 7 years as a Counter Fraud Manager in East Durham. Christopher joined the Council as an elected member in 2009 following a by-election and became Labour Group Leader in 2012. Christopher has a proven track record of success both as an officer and elected member and he subsequently became the Equalities Officer for the National Association of Councillors in 2012.

Personally, Christopher is very community based and has always devoted a great deal of his life to the voluntary and community sector, where he currently works on a part time basis as the HealthWatch Manager for Hartlepool. Christopher chairs his local residents association, within the ward he represents and has been instrumental in securing valuable funding that strengthens local communities, organising activities such as local Neighbourhood Fun Days, home safety events as well as projects for children and young people.

Christopher has a strong commitment to local empowerment and endeavours to be a hard working Councillor who is visible, accountable and accessible all year round. Christopher is presently working with officers on a master planning exercise to regenerate the centre and coastal area of Hartlepool with a focus on Leisure, Tourism and Retail, which should complement our Maritime Visitor experience located within Hartlepool’s Historic Quay.

Christopher has a number of roles within the Council:

  • Chair of Regeneration Services Committee
  • Member of Finance and Policy Committee
  • Member of Appointments Panel
  • Member of South and Central Neighbourhood Forum
