Save our Skins - Sun Safe Nurseries
Skin cancer is the UK’s most common and fastest rising cancer that is almost entirely preventable if appropriate preventative measures are taken.
According to Skcin a UK skin cancer charity, malignant melanoma is one of the most common forms of cancer amongst young adults aged 15-34 – two 15 – 34 year olds are diagnosed with melanoma per day in the UK (http://www.skcin.org/).
Hartlepool Borough Council has been working with local nurseries to raise awareness of the importance of adopting a sun safe policy to protect both employees and children from UV radiation.
Using information provided by agencies including Cancer Research, Skcin, Sun Safe Nurseries and the World Health Organisation Hartlepool Borough Council have developed a Save our Skins Sun Safe Resource Pack for nurseries and primary schools.
Sun Safe Nurseries is an accreditation scheme which aims to introduce and promote positive sun safe messages to children in their early years. It provides free advice and support to nurseries and parents to ensure that young children are adequately protected from the damaging effects of the sun and learn how enjoy the sun safely at an early age.
