Independent Travel Training
This is a scheme to assist people in being able to travel more independently.
Independent travel training is about supporting the individual to safely make a journey between two places on their own. This journey could be as simple as walking around the corner or as complicated as using two buses combined with walking between the connections and walking to and from the stops.
A training programme tailored to the individual needs is provided covering road safety, personal safety and transport training, as required.
The benefits of independent travel are:
- More street-wise
- Improved fitness/lifestyle
- Develop social skills
- Become a safer pedestrians
- Improved self-esteem
- Increase in confidence
- Help with decision making
- Solving problems
- Access to outside activities
- Help by preparing individuals for further education and/or employment
Great care is take to communicate with all parties involved especially families and carers. This will ensure that everyone understands what is happening and is committed to the success of the travel training programme.
