Trees and Development

Under the UK planning system, local authorities have a statutory duty to consider the protection and planting of trees when granting planning permission for proposed development.

Where there are trees on or adjacent to a development site, it is recommended that applicants seek expert advice from an arboriculturalist.

As part of the Local Development Framework, the Trees and Development Guidelines Supplementary Planning Document provides an outline of the procedures and design criteria necessary to achieve the successful integration of existing and new trees, shrubs and hedgerows into new developments.
