Winter Gritting

Hartlepool Borough Council supplies grit boxes to areas with severe ice/frost issues. Unfortunately, due to limited resources, areas with steep gradients take precedence and we are unable to approve all requests.  To request a grit box please complete our online form below:

Defined routes are pre-treated in the event of an adverse weather forecast.  Should the conditions persist, or falls of snow begin to accumulate, treatment may be repeated (continually if necessary) until the adverse conditions end.

Once all routes on the defined network are open and clear of hazard, and if the conditions continue to persist, then treatment of other highways may be considered.

When winter bites … will you and your vehicle be ready?

Before venturing out in severe weather see the Highways England website for advice and up-to-date information on road conditions.  Highways England, which manages motorways and major A roads, also has some useful advice about preparing for your journey and driving in severe weather on its winter web pages.

You can download their handy leaflet below which explains how salt works and sets out the basic tips for safer driving in winter – including what to carry in your vehicle and a check list for before you set off.  There is a cut-out element, which becomes a credit card sized wallet reminder.
