Discounts, Exemptions and Reductions

 

Discounts

Council tax is calculated on the assumption that there are at least 2 adults over the age of 18 resident in the property. If there is only one person over the age of 18 resident, then a 25% single person discount may apply.

Disregard Discounts

Some people don’t count towards paying the council tax and are disregarded and you may also be entitled to a discount if all other residents in your home are disregarded for Council Tax.  If two or more people live in a property

  • You can get 25% off your bill if only one of the people counts towards paying the council tax
  • You can get 50% off your bill if no one who lives there counts towards paying the council tax.

Disabled Band Reduction

You may be entitled to a reduced Council Tax bill if you, or someone who lives with you has a permanent disability, uses a wheelchair indoors, has an extra bathroom or kitchen, or extra room in your property, to meet the special needs arising from a disability

If the reduction is awarded, you will be charged council tax at the band below your current band (eg, if your property is band D, you will be charged at the rate for band C).

Council Tax Support

The Council Tax Support scheme is a discount that helps people on low income pay their council tax.

The amount of support you receive will depend on your income and savings.  If you are on a low income and have savings or investments of less than £16,000, either working, unemployed or retired you may be able to claim help with your council tax payments.

Exemptions

In certain circumstances, properties that are unoccupied or where all the occupants are not counted towards council tax, may be exempt from paying. If you qualify, you will not have to pay council tax for the period the exemption is awarded. 

To qualify for an exemption the property must fall into one of the exemption classes listed in the Council Tax Exemption Information.

Discount and Exemption reviews

The council reviews all discounts and exemptions in order to ensure that there is still an entitlement.

It is important to return the review form confirming your circumstances, otherwise your discount or exemption may be cancelled and a full bill issued.
