What’s Driving Us Course

The What’s Driving Us Course is a driver re-education programme offered to motorists who have committed a moving traffic offence but were not involved in a collision.

This course is an alternative to prosecution and is offered at the discretion of the Police, provided the driver:

  • has not taken a similar awareness course in the last 3 years
  • meets the eligibility criteria set by the referring police force

Course details

  • fee: £79 - fees may vary in other areas
  • duration: 3 hours
  • format: available as both virtual and in-person sessions
  • venues: locations across County Durham and Cleveland

The course is delivered by Department for Transport-approved driving instructors and road safety trainers. It includes a mix of informative presentations and group discussions.

What happens after the course?

  • if you attend and complete the course successfully, no further action will be taken for that incident.
  • your completion will be recorded on a national database.
  • if you commit another offence under the same criteria within 3 years, you will not be offered another course.

If you accept the course but fail to attend or complete it, your case will be referred back to the police for further action.
