Church Street - Have your say on planned improvements

A Hartlepool Council consultation on the redevelopment of a key area of the town is to be extended by a further week.

The consultation on proposed public realm improvements to the Church Street area was originally due to end on 23 September.

However, the deadline has now been extended until Friday 30 September to allow staff and students at Cleveland College of Art and Design Hartlepool – who have recently returned from their summer vacation – further time to comment on the proposals.

The Church Street Innovation & Skills Quarter is one of the priority areas identified by the Council to be transformed as part of the Hartlepool Regeneration Masterplan to spark regeneration, create jobs and ensure future prosperity.

Hartlepool Borough Council is set to receive almost £5.5m in Local Growth Funding from the Tees Valley Combined Authority to help deliver the ambitious Innovation and Skills Quarter project, which will include Church Street public realm improvements.

The ambitious plans to revitalise the area have already received a huge boost with the building of a new £11m Cleveland College of Art and Design which started earlier this year and the purchase of the Grade II listed former General Post Office in Whitby Street, which is planned to be converted into units for start-up businesses specialising in creative industries.

Residents and businesses are invited to complete an online survey about the proposed Church Street public realm improvements at www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/HBC2016-Churchstreet-publicrealm

Councillor Kevin Cranney, chair of the Council’s Regeneration Services Committee, said: “The aim is to breathe new life into Church Street but retain and build upon the area’s heritage and historical past and I hope people will seize the opportunity to have their say by completing the online survey.

“We are striving to create a vibrant environment where creative industries can thrive, providing new job opportunities for local people.”
