HARTLEPOOL’S new Member of the Youth Parliament (MYP) is calling on other young residents to get involved and make a difference in their town.

Callum Reed has been elected as the MYP by Hartlepool Youth Council, which is made up of young people aged 13-18 and works closely with Hartlepool Borough Council to make positive changes for the town’s children and young people.

The 16-year-old, who lives in Burn Valley and studies at Hartlepool Sixth Form College, has been a Deputy MYP and Hartlepool Youth Councillor for two years and takes over from retiring MYP Lauren Howells.

Callum will serve for two years, taking the lead on Hartlepool Youth Council activities and representing the town’s young people at a regional and national level.

Among the topics he’ll be campaigning on is one which young people in Hartlepool are particularly passionate about – a ‘Curriculum For Life’, which means equipping children with life skills as well as a formal curriculum education.

He said: “I would urge more young people to get involved in the Youth Council – it’s a great opportunity to meet new people, find out what’s happening in Hartlepool and, above all, make a difference for other young people in our town.”

Councillor Alan Clark, Chair of Hartlepool Borough Council’s Children’s Services Committee, added: “The contribution which young people make to the work of the Council and the life of the town is extremely valuable and Hartlepool Youth Council and the Youth Parliament play an important part in that.

“I would like to thank Lauren Howells for all her hard work and I look forward to working with Callum. I would very much encourage more young people to get involved.”
