Don't lose the right to vote

RESIDENTS eligible to vote in Hartlepool are being urged to look out for an important letter dropping through their letterboxes over the next few days.

All households are to receive a Household Notification Letter (HNL) which includes details of who is eligible to vote in each property and whether their chosen method of voting is either via a postal/proxy vote or at a polling station.

If the information on the HNL is correct, voters do not need to do anything, but if changes are required residents need to get in touch with the Council’s Electoral Team.

The letters will also contain information about how to apply for a postal vote.

On Thursday 3rd May this year there will be an election in each of the 11 Hartlepool Borough Council wards in the town.

Peter Devlin, Hartlepool Council’s Returning Officer, said: “It is important that residents receiving a HNL check the information carefully to make sure it is correct. If it is not there are clear instructions on what to do.

“If people do not appear on the Electoral Register they will not be entitled to vote in forthcoming elections, with the deadline for registering to vote in the elections on 3rd May being Tuesday 17th April.”

Mr Devlin went on to emphasise to importance of people using their vote.

“It’s so important for people to exercise their right to vote as this gives them the opportunity to influence decisions which affect their local area.”
