Janes get in free for Jane Eyre theatre show

THE classic story of favourite fictional heroine Jane Eyre comes to Hartlepool Town Hall Theatre on Tuesday 20 March – and there’s free entry if you’re a ‘Jane’ or ‘Jayne’!

Struggling to think, live and love beyond the stifling expectations of duty, class and convention, governess Jane Eyre and Master Edward Rochester take a dark journey towards sensual and intellectual liberation.

Told through Jane’s eyes, English literature’s most celebrated autobiographical novel shocked the Victorians, and Charlotte Brontë’s gothic subversion of fairy-tale romance is now distilled for the stage – under its full title ‘Jane Eyre: An Autobiography’ – by writer/director Elton Townend Jones.

Actress Rebecca Vaughan embodies everywoman Jane and several other characters in this intimate study of love’s realities from the creators of acclaimed theatre shows The Unremarkable Death of Marilyn Monroe, Dalloway, Austen’s Women, Female Gothic and Elizabeth.

The show has earned considerable praise from the critics. “Truly extraordinary – one of the most exciting young performers on the British stage,” said the British Theatre Guide, while Broadway Baby dubbed it “Hands down the best adaptation of Jane Eyre in any medium.”

The show starts at 7.30pm and tickets cost £12 (or £10 for concessions), but in a special one-off promotional offer, entry is free for people called Jane or Jayne, but they must provide proof of identity when they buy or collect their ticket.

Tickets are available online by clicking here or from Hartlepool Art Gallery and Tourist Information Centre in Church Square on 01429 890000 (open Tuesdays-Fridays 10am–4.30pm and Saturdays 10am–4pm).
