If football isn’t of interest, mixed activity sessions at Brierton Sports Centre run on Fridays from 11am - 12pm, where men can try everything from table tennis, pool and Boccia to Kurling and Kwik Cricket.

The sessions form part of a project that is funded by Hartlepool and Stockton-on-Tees Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and led by Volunteering Matters through Sporting Chance, in partnership with Hartlepool Borough Council’s Sport and Physical Activity Team.

For those interested in seeing what’s on offer, a free taster event will take place on Wednesday 18 July from 12.30pm – 1.30pm at Mill House Leisure Centre, Hartlepool.

Richard Battman, one of Hartlepool Borough Council’s Sports Coaches, said: “These free sessions offer gents over 50 a gentle route into re-starting a sport or trying one for the first time.

“We’ve got players who have joined us to improve their general fitness or to ease back into moving more after serious health setbacks, as well as lads who were simply looking to become more activity in their communities and widen their friendship circle.

“The camaraderie between those involved is fantastic. While their competitive spirits certainly show on the pitch, as soon as the whistle blows they all come together to enjoy a hot drink and a chat.

“We’d encourage anyone interested in getting involved to come along and try the free taster event to see the full range of activities on offer.”
